About
FloraPulse
Retire the pressure chamber, know exactly when to irrigate, increase crop yield and quality.

FloraPulse began in the orchards and vineyards of growers.
Since the 1970’s, Alan Lakso, professor of Horticulture at Cornell, had been dragging around the heavy, manual pressure chamber to measure and manage water stress in apple trees and grapevines. Alan was documenting the levels of water stress and their effect on fruit growth and quality. Back then, winegrape growers understood that water stress was important to wine quality, but only had the pressure chamber to measure it.
Why FloraPulse?
Root Rot California
Causes of Root Rot in California
As a pioneering organization, we at FloraPulse understand the intricate challenges that growers face, particularly in California, where root rot is increasingly becoming a concern. Root rot is primarily caused by fungal pathogens like Phytophthora, Pythium, and Rhizoctonia, which thrive in overly wet soil conditions. These pathogens attack the roots of plants, causing them to decay. In California, over-irrigation, poor drainage, and flooding are common issues that exacerbate the presence of these pathogens.
Symptoms of Root Rot in California
Early detection of root rot is crucial for effective management. The symptoms are often visible above ground, even though the problem starts below the surface. Common symptoms include yellowing leaves, wilting, stunted growth, and in severe cases, plant death. Below the soil, affected roots appear dark, mushy, and emit a foul odor. Recognizing these symptoms early is vital for implementing timely interventions.
Prevention of Root Rot in California
Preventing root rot in California involves an integrated approach to water and soil management. Proper irrigation practices are paramount. This is where our FloraPulse technology can make a significant impact by providing accurate irrigation guidance through sensor data. Ensuring well-drained soil and avoiding waterlogged conditions are essential steps. Regular monitoring of soil moisture levels helps in making informed irrigation decisions, thereby reducing the risk of root rot.
Treatment Options for Root Rot in California
Once root rot is detected, several treatment options can be employed. Removing infected plants and promoting dry soil conditions help stop the spread. Using fungicides specifically designed for root rot pathogens can also be effective. We advocate for incorporating our irrigation sensors as a preventive tool to maintain optimal water levels, reducing the chances of recurrence.
Common Plants Affected by Root Rot in California
Root rot doesn’t discriminate and affects a wide variety of plants in California, from vineyards to orchards. Commonly impacted plants include grapevines, avocados, citrus trees, and ornamental plants. Each of these has unique water needs and vulnerabilities, making precise irrigation even more critical. Tailoring irrigation strategies to specific crops with the help of FloraPulse technology can mitigate the risk of root rot.
Environmental Factors Contributing to Root Rot in California
California’s diverse climate and frequent droughts often lead to over-irrigation, a common pitfall that contributes to root rot. Additionally, heavy clay soils prevalent in some regions hinder proper drainage, creating a favorable environment for pathogens. We recommend adopting adaptive irrigation techniques that respond to real-time environmental conditions, thereby minimizing root rot risks.
Best Practices for Managing Root Rot in California
Managing root rot effectively requires the implementation of several best practices:
- Soil Testing: Regular soil tests to check for pathogens and drainage issues.
- Irrigation Management: Using technology like FloraPulse sensors to optimize water use.
- Cultural Practices: Rotating crops and planting resistant varieties.
- Sanitation: Cleaning tools and equipment to prevent the spread of pathogens.
Adopting these practices helps in maintaining the health of plants and soil alike.
Importance of Early Detection of Root Rot in California
Early detection of root rot is crucial for its successful management. By the time above-ground symptoms are apparent, the disease may have already caused significant damage. Our technology provides real-time data which assists in identifying stress in plants before severe symptoms develop. This proactive approach allows growers to implement corrective measures promptly, maintaining plant health and improving yield quality.
At FloraPulse, we are committed to helping growers combat root rot effectively. With the right tools and knowledge, growers can ensure plant health and productivity, securing robust yields even in the face of challenging conditions. As industry leaders in irrigation technology, we continue to support the agricultural community in California by providing innovative solutions that address the complexities of root rot and other water-related challenges.

How It Works
How It Works
The FloraPulse system is a microchip tensiometer (microtensiometer) that is embedded into the tree woody tissue and directly measures the water status, known as water potential. Because the measurement is taken directly inside the water-carrying tissue, readings are very accurate and reliable. You receive daily midday stem water potential readings, along with science-backed irrigation recommendations.
Weekly Reports
Receive weekly reports on your crop’s water-stress history, color-coded by stress level. Use clear, detailed data to adjust your irrigation and get that perfect vintage, that perfect yield. Every year.
Scientific Validation
The sensor data has been validated against the Scholander chamber with good correlation in prune, almond, winegrape (and others).
Technology Backers

Our technology has been funded by the NSF and USDA, and was originally developed at Cornell University.
What is FloraPulse?
The most accurate way to irrigate.
