About
FloraPulse
Retire the pressure chamber, know exactly when to irrigate, increase crop yield and quality.

FloraPulse began in the orchards and vineyards of growers.
Since the 1970’s, Alan Lakso, professor of Horticulture at Cornell, had been dragging around the heavy, manual pressure chamber to measure and manage water stress in apple trees and grapevines. Alan was documenting the levels of water stress and their effect on fruit growth and quality. Back then, winegrape growers understood that water stress was important to wine quality, but only had the pressure chamber to measure it.
Why FloraPulse?
Powdery Mildew California
Symptoms of Powdery Mildew in California
As a grower in California, recognizing the symptoms of powdery mildew early is crucial for effective management. This fungal disease manifests as a white, powdery substance on the leaves, stems, and sometimes fruits of plants. The initial signs are usually small, white spots that gradually cover entire leaf surfaces. Infected leaves may curl, turn yellow, or become stunted, affecting the plant’s overall health and yield. The disease primarily attacks young, tender growth, making it particularly destructive during the growing season.
Common Plants Affected by Powdery Mildew in California
Powdery mildew does not discriminate among plant species, but certain plants are more susceptible than others. In California, this includes a wide range of crops such as grapes, apples, cucumbers, squash, and roses. Vineyards are particularly at risk, with grapevines being highly vulnerable. Our organization works closely with vineyards to monitor these plants closely, ensuring that any sign of powdery mildew is dealt with swiftly.
Control and Prevention of Powdery Mildew in California
Climate Conditions Favorable for Powdery Mildew in California
The climate in California, with its warm days, cool nights, and high humidity, especially in coastal and valley regions, creates an ideal environment for powdery mildew. Understanding these conditions helps in predicting outbreaks and implementing preventative measures.
Impact of Powdery Mildew on Agriculture in California
The economic impact of powdery mildew on California’s agriculture is significant. It reduces crop yield and quality, affecting both revenue and market value. For high-value crops like wine grapes, this can be particularly damaging. Powdery mildew interrupts photosynthesis and can lead to premature leaf drop, further reducing the plant’s productivity.
Chemical Treatments for Powdery Mildew in California
Chemical fungicides are a common method for controlling powdery mildew. These treatments should be applied early and consistently throughout the growing season for maximum effectiveness. However, it’s crucial to rotate fungicides to prevent the fungus from developing resistance. Growers in our network are advised to use these treatments judiciously, balancing efficacy with environmental considerations and crop safety.
Organic Methods to Combat Powdery Mildew in California
For those seeking organic solutions, several options are available. These include sulfur-based treatments, neem oil, and baking soda mixtures. The use of resistant plant varieties and maintaining adequate plant spacing to improve air circulation are also effective strategies. We emphasize integrated pest management practices, combining cultural, biological, and chemical methods to tackle powdery mildew organically.
Research on Powdery Mildew in California
Ongoing research is vital in understanding and combating powdery mildew. Studies funded by entities like the USDA are exploring new resistant plant varieties and innovative treatment methods. We actively participate in these research efforts, providing data from our irrigation sensors to better understand the correlation between water stress and disease susceptibility. By contributing to this body of knowledge, we help growers make informed decisions.
Management Strategies for Powdery Mildew in California
Successful management of powdery mildew requires a multifaceted approach. This involves timely identification, strategic application of fungicides, and the adoption of resistant plant varieties. Our organization provides precise irrigation management, which is a critical component of these strategies. By ensuring optimal water potential through our sensors, we help reduce plant stress, making crops less susceptible to fungal infections.
In conclusion, powdery mildew presents a formidable challenge to California’s agricultural sector. However, with vigilant monitoring, strategic treatment applications, and innovative technologies like those we provide, growers can effectively manage this disease. We are committed to supporting our partners with the tools and insights needed to protect their crops, improve yields, and sustain the agricultural vitality of California.

How It Works
How It Works
The FloraPulse system is a microchip tensiometer (microtensiometer) that is embedded into the tree woody tissue and directly measures the water status, known as water potential. Because the measurement is taken directly inside the water-carrying tissue, readings are very accurate and reliable. You receive daily midday stem water potential readings, along with science-backed irrigation recommendations.
Weekly Reports
Receive weekly reports on your crop’s water-stress history, color-coded by stress level. Use clear, detailed data to adjust your irrigation and get that perfect vintage, that perfect yield. Every year.
Scientific Validation
The sensor data has been validated against the Scholander chamber with good correlation in prune, almond, winegrape (and others).
Technology Backers

Our technology has been funded by the NSF and USDA, and was originally developed at Cornell University.
What is FloraPulse?
The most accurate way to irrigate.
